On November 22, 2013, I took a trip back to my alma mater, Ramapo College of New Jersey, to give a presentation on Social Media Marketing.
As a former student of the Anisfield School of Business and more specifically the marketing class which I gave the presentation in; I thought back to topics my classmates and I were hoping to learn. I also wanted to share whatever insights I have experienced as a recent graduate when it comes to applying for jobs.
Within the hour and a half class, topics that were discussed included a breakdown of social media marketing, how to build social engagement, SEO, and the importance of an internship to gain real world experience.
I started the lecture by asking the students “What is your definition of Social Media Marketing?” It was important to get their viewpoint first, because in an age where young people use social media for numerous personal reasons, I wanted to be sure to establish a baseline for social media in the business world.
As the class went on we had a number of great questions and discussions. This helped the students gain a better understanding of this new kind of marketing which is becoming a norm in today’s business world. Ed Petkus, professor of the senior marketing class stated,
“Social media marketing is of course becoming more and more prevalent and important, but I'm pretty low-involvement when it comes to social media, so it's important for me to have people who know what they're talking about come to my class and share their expertise with my students. Jessica was able to discuss the topic in such professional detail, yet in such a way that the students could understand it all, that her presentation was one of the best learning experiences of the semester. And I include myself as a "student" that day as well."
I had a wonderful time going back to Ramapo and it was a great experience to speak about a topic which I am extremely passionate about and have started a career in.
